South Luangwa National Park is renowned for being one of the greatest wildlife destinations in Africa. This unspoilt wilderness plays host to huge concentrations of wildlife including Elephants, Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra, Lion and over 450 species of birds. It is also a prolific area for photographing Leopard. Perfect for all levels of wildlife photographer, be it first time users or more advanced, wishing to take stunning photographs.

This exciting Photographic Safari is guided by Award Winning Professional Wildlife Photographer Tom Way. Travelling as part of a small and exclusive group of 6 you will be staying in Zambia’s best known luxury camps which offer spectacular views from your stylish tented ensuite accommodation situated in prime positions alongside the Luangwa River. During the extent of your safari you will not only be guided by Tom in regards to the photography, but you will also have your own private driver and spotter to ensure that you are in the right place at the best time to maximise your sightings. Very importantly this trip is planned to coincide with the peak of the dry season to make spotting wildlife easier and create superb photographic opportunities.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Leave Europe on an overnight flight to Lusaka via Dubai (we can help arrange flights if needed).

Day 2: On arrival at Lusaka Airport you will be met by Tom and after a warm greeting you will then be driven by our private driver to Pioneer Camp. Here we will meet up as a group for the first time, relax and prepare for our short flight into the bush early the following morning.

Day 3: We will take a short morning flight into the bush and land at the Mfuwe airstrip where we will be greeted by our private driver. We will then drive to the luxury Kakuli Bush Camp. An initimate camp with spectacular views of the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons. This is an area which offers guests some of the best game viewing in South Luangwa National Park and the edge of the river is bustling with predators. We will arrive in time for lunch before heading out for our first game drive. After using the evening light to our advantage, we will then return back to camp for dinner before heading to your lovely ensuite safari tent for your first night in the bush.

Day 4: This will be our first full day in the bush.  Before first light we will embark on an early game drive taking breakfast with us to photograph the animals when they are at their most active in the stunning African sunrise. Tom will be on hand to maximise your learning and photography skills ensuring you are making the most of every opportunity. We will return back to camp in time for lunch and a chance to review your mornings shots. At around 3pm we will set out on our afternoon game drive taking a different route into the bush in search for wildlife such as Elephants, Giraffe and Lion. Both during the afternoons and evenings there will be plenty of opportunities to download images and review these with Tom. You will be given group presentations on various aspects of wildlife photography and how to process your images. You will be also given plenty of 1-1 time with Tom to constantly review your images throughout the safari and he can discuss with you which areas you would like to aim to improve on for the next drive.

Day 5 and 6: These days will follow the same pattern as day 4. We will be out both mornings and afternoons to give you the best opportunity to achieve a wide portfolio of images.

Day 7: On this morning will we drive out of camp as usual in search of both Lion and Leopard whilst they are still active during the morning light. After breakfast in camp we will pack our bags and make our short journey to the excellent Mchenja Camp further North into the park. Here we will be based for three nights in a stunning location again set on the banks of the Luangwa River by the beautiful ebony groves. Mchenja camp boasts extremely good predator sightings which gives us a chance to improve on any images taken earlier in the safari. We will be in camp in time for lunch and relax into our new surroundings before taking our afternoon game drive. We will be out until sunset taking advantage of the beautiful Africa light before using a spotlight in search of nocturnal animals on the way back to camp for dinner around the camp fire. It is worth noting that both non photographers or travel companions are welcome to join this safari and whilst both camps provide unrivalled views from your rooms, Mchenja also has a plunge pool for you to cool off in the heat of the day and unwind in the shade if needed.

Day 8 and 9:  These days will follow the same pattern as day 4. We will be out both mornings and afternoons to give you the best opportunity to achieve a wide portfolio of images.

Day 10: On our last morning we head out for our final game drive before returning to camp for breakfast.  After packing our bags we will make our way to the Mfuwe airstrip and onward to Lusaka in time to catch your homeward flight or onward to your next destination (We can help you plan an extension to the start or end of this safari, including to the Kafue  – Lower Zambezi – Victoria Falls or beyond). It is here where we bid you farewell.

Day 11: Arrive back in the UK/Europe after our overnight flights

A typical day on safari:

  • Morning wake up call (before sunrise)
  • Breakfast and tea/coffee at the campfire
  • Morning Game Drive
  • Camp lunch and short rest. Downloading and reviewing images. Tom will be on hand at this point to help review and critique images
  • Afternoon Game Drive
  • Dinner and drinks around the camp fire

Camera Equipment:

In terms of camera kit, the longest lens you have will be required. A minimum of a 300mm lens will be necessary to get the best out of your images on safari. A smaller zoom (eg. 70-200)  lens would also be ideal to capture the animals that come close to us and a wide angle lens for those stunning sunrise/sunsets. A bean bag is the best support for the photography based in the vehicle. Make sure you bring plenty of memory cards and also a spare battery always comes in very useful.

If you would like to hire a lens for this trip I can recommend using Lenses For Hire who have a large range of zoom and prime lenses to choose from.

Help And Guidance:

One of the most important factors of a photographic safari is that you receive as much help and guidance as required. You will receive personal coaching on this trip and Tom will assist you with every step and be in the vehicle with you on all of your game drives to ensure that you are taking stunning wildlife images. Whilst in the vehicle, Tom will be in constant communication with our driver to position ourselves in the best spot for your photographs taking into account the lighting and background. He will be able to give advice regarding what settings to use at different sightings and also advice regarding compositions.

During the afternoons and the heat of the day when most of the wildlife is seeking shade, Tom gives various talks and presentations about taking wildlife images on safari. We cover topics such as capturing character, shooting in different lightings conditions and looking for the perfect backgrounds. Tom also gives a processing session and shows you how to go about processing your images in Adobe Lightroom that you have taken on safari.

Each day you will be offered the opportunity of reviewing your images on a laptop with Tom on a 1-1 basis. He can discuss with you what areas to improve on for the next drive whilst also covering any technical questions your have regarding your camera set up. In these review sessions he will also help and advise you on processing your images. The entire safari is tailored in such a way so that you are able to learn as much as possible from Tom during your holiday and that you will leave with your photography skills improved.

What our last customers said:

Dear Tom and Busanga Safaris. WOW! WOW! WOW!!  And even that doesn’t really cover how much Trevor and I feel about the trip!!! Can’t thank you enough for making it such an AMAZING experience. It was everything and more than desired and expected. I certainly didn’t want to leave and we have missed our days out on safari and in camp with you, Tom and Ty – it was so fun, relaxing, exciting, and fascinating all at once. Thank you, Tony, for putting the whole amazing trip together and making it so easy. Thank you, Tom, for the wonderful, expert, photography guidance and advice (and patience with me, I am sure!). And thank you, Ty, for your superb guiding skills and knowledge (including of strategically placed holes in the Plains!!), and your enthusiasm for the Zambian wildlife and country in general. As I said to you, the unexpected pleasure for me was the appreciation of the amazing birdlife, of which you clearly have a deep knowledge and love. Your joy was infectious. Thanks also to the teams at the camps who were so friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. Hope to get back out to Zambia again in the not too distant future. And to go on another photography trip with you, Tom! – Sally and Trevor – Zambia Photographic Safari 2014

Many thanks for leading an absolutely wonderful safari, Jill and I had the most amazing experience that we could possibly have had. Its still all we talk about and everybody we tell is envious of the trip and all we saw. I got some really wonderful images, great advice for processing to make the images stunning. Many thanks for everything that you did for us that really did make our safari the holiday of a life time – Bryan and Jill – Zambia Photographic Safari 2016
